BACK AND SPINE PROBLEMS

Back and lumbar spine problems are common health problems that many people experience. These problems can include a variety of conditions that occur in the spine, discs, nerves, muscles and connective tissues. Here are some of the back and lumbar spine problems:
Low Back Pain
- Low back pain is a discomfort felt in the lower back. It can often be caused by muscle strain, disc problems, spinal curvature or a herniated disc.
Back Pain
- Back pain is usually felt in the shoulders, back and neck. Sitting position, poor posture, muscle strain or disc problems can cause back pain.
Scoliosis
- Scoliosis refers to a sideways curvature of the spine. The condition usually begins in childhood or adolescence and is characterized by an abnormal curvature in the shape of the spine.
Lumbar Hernia
- A herniated disc is a condition in which the outer layer of one of the spinal discs cracks and its contents leak out. This condition can often cause lower back pain and pain in the legs.
Spinal Stenosis
- Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal cord or nerve roots. This condition is often associated with the aging process and can cause pain, weakness and loss of sensation in the lower back or neck.
Spine Fractures
- Spinal fractures are usually caused by traumatic events, falls or accidents. These fractures can be in the lumbar or cervical region.
Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic condition that usually causes inflammation in the vertebrae and stiffness of the joints.
Spine Tumors
- Spinal tumors are cancerous or non-cancerous growths that occur in the spine. These tumors can press on the bones of the spine or the spinal cord.
Spine Infections
- Spinal infections are associated with bacteria or other pathogens that cause inflammation in the spine.
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the problem and the patient’s general health. Physical therapy, medications, surgery and lifestyle changes are common treatment modalities used in the management of spinal problems. Patients should speak to a health professional for a treatment plan that is appropriate for their specific condition.
